Rape Crisis and Recovery Centers

Rape Crisis and Recovery Centers provide the following confidential services to adult  and child victims as well as their families, partners, and loved ones:

  • Crisis intervention, counseling, and referral.
  • Victim accompaniment to hospitals, police interviews, and court.
  • 24-hour Crisis Hotline with counselors trained to listen and offer information.
  • Individual, group, and family psychotherapy.
  • Assistance navigating the legal and judicial systems.

All  crisis-intervention, referral, and accompaniment services are free. Clinical services provided by specially trained psychologists, social workers, and paraprofessionals are either free or based on a sliding  scale according to individual financial resources. Programs may also accept private insurance, medical assistance, or Medicare and most offer subsidized fees. No one is turned away due to inability to pay for services.

MCASA's Sexual Assault Legal Institute

In addition to Rape Crisis and Recovery Centers, MCASA’s Sexual Assault Legal Institute (SALI) provides legal services to survivors of sexual assault statewide. Visit the SALI page for more information.

TTY Services

To accommodate people who may be hearing or speech impaired, all Rape Crisis and Recovery Centers are equipped with TTY machines.

For those who do not have access to a TTY machine, the Maryland Relay system can be reached by dialing 711. The Maryland Relay is a communication system that allows contact between TTY users and standard phone users. If you are deaf, hearing or speech impaired or need to contact a TTY user who is, simply dial 711 for a Relay operator. An operator will facilitate the conversation by talking to the standard phone user and typing to the TTY user. This service is completely free for all local calls and is available 24 hours a day/365 days a year. All calls are strictly confidential and no record of any conversation is kept.

Language Line

Some of Maryland's Rape Crisis and Recovery Centers have the ability to respond to non-English speakers on their hotlines by using the Language Line. The Language Line interpretation services are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for people who speak any one of 140 different languages. Important Note: Although the majority of Rape Crisis and Recovery Centers utilize the Language Line, not all Centers have interpretation services. In addition, interpretation services may be limited to hotline calls only and not extend to counseling services. Please ask your local Rape Crisis and Recovery Center about the extent of their interpretation services.
