MCASA at the United State of Women Summit

Jun 24th, 2016

On June 14th, the White House held a national summit on  the United State of Women. Violence against women was a major focus of the summit. Many speakers and organizations addressed the issue, inspiring us and reaffirming our mission to prevent sexual violence, advocate for the care of survivors, and work to hold perpetrators accountable. Vice President Joe Biden spoke about the epidemic nature of the issue, reaffirming his decades-long commitment to ending sexual and gender based violence. There were also representatives from the White House campaign It’s on Us, and other state sexual assault coalitions from around the country. MCASA's Executive Director & Counsel, Lisae Jordan, Esq., was honored to be there to represent MCASA and Maryland's 17 Rape Crisis Centers.  She joined thousands of women leaders including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Amy Poehler, Nansi Palosi, Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, and Billie Jean-King just to name a few. The conference was made up of 5,000 change-makers, leaders, business owners, comedians, politicians, activists, mothers and entrepreneurs from across the nation. The participants celebrated the many achievements and advancements towards women’s equality that we have witnessed over the years, and called for leaders to continue their efforts to end intersectional inequities. While 5,000 women and men attended the conference, we know many more - yourself included – are working to end sexual violence and work towards gender equality. There are still opportunities for you to get involved with the summit, and we invite you to watch the film of the event.  Thank you for your continued work and attention to these critical issues as MCASA remains dedicated to preventing sexual violence and advocating for survivors. As many of us participate in the national efforts, we hope you also continue to support us here  in Maryland and help us end sexual violence in our state.  Your MCASA membership helps change policy, help survivors, and support rape crisis centers.
