MCASA in the News: Rape Survivor Family Protection Act Set to Be Enacted

Feb 12th, 2018

A recent article from marylandmatters.org highlights the amazing strides the Rape Survivor Family Protection Act has made in the Maryland General Assembly. This bill, which would provide rape survivors who become pregnant as a result of their attack the ability to terminate the parental rights of their assailants, is heading to Governor Hogan’s desk to be signed this week. MCASA’s Executive Director and Counsel Lisae C. Jordan, Esq. commented on the impact of this long-awaited piece of legislation.

“I think it is respectful of rape victims to give them options,” said Lisae C. Jordan, executive director of the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault. “It is still a very tough row to hoe and we look forward to litigating cases. At least we [will] have a chance to fight.”

The Rape Survivor Family Protection Act has been a top legislative priority for MCASA. Significant progress has been made with both chambers of the general assembly, unanimously voting to pass the bill within the first month of session.
