Virtual Campus Training Session #2: Culturally Informed Care for BIPOC & Indigenous Sexual Assault Survivors

MCASA’s Virtual Campus Training Series addresses sexual violence prevention and response on campus with a survivor-centered focus. Join MCASA staff and guest speakers during this series as we explore important and trending topics impacting student sexual assault survivors.

Empowering and supporting college students is at the core of the work of higher education professionals. They play a pivotal role in creating safe and nurturing environments for students. To address the unique needs of diverse students, including survivors of sexual assault within BIPOC and Indigenous communities, we must equip ourselves with the knowledge and skills needed to provide culturally informed care.

This virtual campus training webinar is tailored to college and university staff as well as community advocates working on campus sexual assault prevention and response. This training will deepen your understanding of the challenges faced by student survivors and offer practical guidance on how to provide culturally informed support.

Key topics covered:

  • Understanding the context: Exploring the prevalence and underreporting of sexual assault and its connection to historical trauma.
  • Culturally informed care: Defining cultural informed care and strategies to avoid stereotypes and biases.
  • Intersectionality and identity: Recognizing the multifaceted nature of identities and the unique experiences of BIPOC and Indigenous students
  • Cultural considerations: Delving into diverse belief systems, traditional healing practices, and the power of effective communication.
  • Trauma-informed care: Gaining insights into trauma responses and creating a safe, empathetic space.
  • Best practices in care: Building trust, using empowerment-based approaches, and personalizing support to individual needs.
  • Supporting Indigenous communities: Respecting sovereignty, fostering cultural autonomy, and building partnerships with Indigenous organizations.

Through real-life examples and collaborative discussions, this training empowers you to provide compassionate and culturally informed care to college student survivors. By participating, you will enhance your ability to create inclusive campus environments that promote resilience and healing.
